Other alternative gasoline mandate

As of January 2024, the Vietnamese government has not mandated using alternatives to gasoline fuels.

However, the government set a target of 20% of buses and taxis to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in 2020. The original plan was to increase the share of CNG and LPG buses and taxis to 80% by 2050.

In Viet Nam, Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is leading the move to deploy an environmentally friendly public transportation sector. The municipality introduced CNG buses in April 2010. At the end of 2023, there were 496 CNG-powered buses across 17 routes managed by six transportation companies. These CNG buses accounted for more than 24% of the total buses in the city.
