Recent developments
Following the publication of the official South African Government Gazette on June 24, 2022, the implementation of new fuel quality requirements is expected to be from July 1, 2027. The current diesel specifications are set in the standard SANS 342:2016, only for the requirements relating to Clean Fuels 1 (CF1) regulations. CF1 regulations were introduced in 2006. The next stage of the clean fuels regulations, CF2, was scheduled to be in force in 2017, but has been postponed to July 1, 2027. The delay in the implementation of CF2 is due to ongoing discussions between the refining industry and the government, notably about financing the upgrade of the refineries for the production of low-sulfur fuel.
