Future of Biodiesel in Minnesota

Due to Minnesota’s weather conditions, it is unlikely that the government would establish a biodiesel mandate higher than B5 during the winter months. It is also unlikely that a higher biodiesel blend than B20 would be implemented during summer because of vehicle compatibility issues. The only way to increase biomass-based diesel in Minnesota would be using Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) or renewable fuel, for which the government does not have any known plans.
