Consumption by sulfur grade
As noted earlier, save for very few exceptions, all of the diesel consumed in the U.S. conforms to the Environmental Protection Agency’s ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) requirements. Applications in which non-ULSD use is allowed have been declining over time. Low-sulfur diesel (sulfur content greater than 15 mg/Kg) demand has declined from 590,000 barrels per day (bpd) in 2010 to only 40,000 bpd in 2023. By comparison, consumption of ULSD during those two years totaled 3.4 million barrels per day (MMbbl/d) and 3.9 MMbbl/d respectively.
