Fuel retail stations in Japan are not required to display information about diesel grades at the pump stations. However, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, under the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, has released regulations pertaining to the operation of self-service refueling stations under Disaster Prevention No. 25 of March 1998 (amended May 2012).

Under this regulation, oil marketing companies shall use different colors on fuel nozzles based on the fuel they dispense. The color of the nozzle used for diesel is green.
