Vehicle fleet

At the end of September 2023, more than 82.8 million vehicles were registered in Japan. Of these, 62 million vehicles (75.1%) are passenger cars, 14.6 million vehicles (17.6%) are goods vehicles, and 4 million vehicles (4.9%) are three-wheelers. The remaining 2.4% of vehicles consist of special-purpose vehicles and buses.

In Japan, next-generation vehicles are defined as hybrid, plug-in hybrid electric, battery electric, fuel cell electric, and clean diesel vehicles. In 2022, these next-generation vehicles accounted for 40% of total new registrations. Among those, hybrid vehicles’ share was the highest at 34.5%.
