The figure below shows the production and consumption of diesel in Egypt, from 2016 to 2021, according to latest official data. In 2021, both the consumption and production of diesel increased slightly. Note that in 2020, due to the travel restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the level of diesel consumption was at its lowest between 2016 and 2021. The production of diesel was lowest in 2018 with 6.9 million tonnes per year, but increased by about 11% in 2021. However, the level of production is not sufficient to satisfy the local demand, which implies that Egypt has increased its dependence on imports of diesel.
