Imports and exports
Due to increasing demand and decreasing supply, Egypt must import diesel to meet its domestic demand. The import and export volumes of diesel are shown in the figure below.
Imports decreased to their lowest level in 2020, due to the travel restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, they increased to about 28 million barrels, but not to the average level of 51 million barrels per year which had been observed in the years prior to the pandemic. Exports on the other hand, peaked in 2019 with 8.1 million barrels, but decreased to approximately 0.8 million barrels in 2021.
