Imports and exports
Due to increased demand and a relatively constant low supply of gasoline, Egypt relies on gasoline imports to meet its domestic needs. The figure below shows the volume of gasoline imported and exported over the last few years. In 2021, gasoline imports decreased by 22% compared to 2016. In 2020, gasoline imports were at their lowest volume of about 33 million barrels, due to travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The export of gasoline only began in 2017 and stayed at very low volumes to about 0.2 million barrels in 2021.
