Recent developments
•Italy’s biofuel sector is almost completely dominated by diesel substitutes (97%), mostly biodiesel (FAME), as well as a small volume of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) produced from palm oil
•Italy has decreased palm oil based biodiesel over the past years and has increased consumption of biodiesel produced from wastes and residues that can be double-counted towards the national renewable energy share target
•In 2019, a second bio-refinery was opened to produce HVO based on waste from food production, regenerated used cooking oil (RUCO), animal fat (tallow) and by-products from processing vegetable oil
•SGS INSPIRE observed sales of diesel containing up to 15% v/v of HVO in Italy
