Recent developments
In September 2021, the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology started the implementation of the latest national gasoline standard UAE.S: 5018:2021, which is in-line with the Euro 5-equivalent gasoline quality standard. The standard reduces the maximum sulfur limit from the current 50 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg, and introduces the following:
•A reduction of the maximum manganese limit from 5 mg/l to 2 mg/l
•A reduction of the maximum aromatics limit from 40% v/v to 35% v/v
•A reduction of the maximum benzene limit from 1.5% v/v to 1.0% v/v
•A ban on the addition of phosphorous-containing additives to gasoline
•Limiting the type of octane enhancer that can be used for methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) and tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME)
