Recent developments
In January 2020, the Omani government updated national gasoline standard, OS 1642:2018. This standard significantly tightened fuel quality requirements by reducing the maximum sulfur content in gasoline from 50 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg. It also introduced stricter limits on hydrocarbon content and the use of metallic additives.
In response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Omani government introduced a fuel subsidy in October 2021, capping the retail prices of RON 91 and RON 95 at OMR 0.229 (USD 0.59)/liter and OMR 0.239 (USD 0.62)/liter, respectively. The original plan was to maintain the ceiling prices only until the end of 2022. However, as of March 2025, the gasoline retail prices have remained unchanged.
