Octane enhancers
Depending on the crude oil quality and refinery process, gasoline produced by the refineries may not necessarily meet the minimum octane required by the specifications. Hence, refiners added octane enhancers into gasoline. There are many types of octane enhancers commonly used by the refiners:
•Organic octane enhancers
•Non-organic octane enhancers
At present, ethers, or more specifically methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), are the most commonly used in many countries. Ethanol is frequently used in countries with a mature sugar industry. In Oman, MTBE and tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME) are the most commonly used octane enhancers in gasoline.
