Sulfur
Sulfur is the third most commonly found element in crude petroleum, after carbon and hydrogen. However, it increases metal corrosion in engines, fuel systems and after-treatment systems; and increases sulfur-oxides emissions. For those reasons, governments limit sulfur content in fuels, including diesel, through fuel specifications.
There is one diesel grade in terms of sulfur in Sudan. It should meet a limit of 500 mg/kg.
According to the SGS Worldwide Fuel Survey (WWFS), sulfur content in diesel has complied with the regulatory limit, and the average sulfur content of samples was approximately 50 mg/kg.
