Renewable fuels used in the maritime sector

On December 2018, the EU approved a 14% renewable energy share target for the transport sector, to be achieved by 2030. With the exception of fuels produced from food and feed crops, the share of fuels supplied in the maritime sector shall be considered to be 1.2 times their energy content toward this target. This applies to biofuels produced from feedstocks listed in the EU Renewable Energy Directive‘s (RED II) Annex IX (e.g. cellulosic, ligno cellulosic, animal fat and used cooking oil feedstocks) and renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO), which means liquid and gaseous fuels used in all sectors, the energy content of which is derived from renewable sources other than biomass (e.g. green hydrogen, e-fuels produced from renewable elec
