Market size and developments

North America has fairly substantial ammonia production capacity already in place. In 2022, production reached nearly 17 million tonnes. The region currently accounts for 11% of world ammonia production. Although there are longstanding production hubs in the U.S. Corn Belt states (Ohio, Iowa, Indiana, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois) most recent growth has been located in states by or near the Gulf Coast (e.g. Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma). Currently about 60% of total U.S. ammonia production capacity is located in Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas because of their large reserves of natural gas.
