Exports and imports
The current fuel ethanol production capacity is sufficient to meet demand for E5 RON 92 (RON 92 containing 4-5% v/v of ethanol). However, due to high cassava prices, production has been hovering around 40 million liters since 2018, significantly below the volume required to meet the E5 mandate.
The remaining volume was imported, mainly from the U.S., directly or via South Korea, as South Korea has a special tax agreement with Viet Nam.
In 2022, approximately 17 million gallons (64.26 million liters) of ethanol were imported from the U.S.
No fuel ethanol is exported from Viet Nam.
