Policy framework and regional mandates
In Europe, the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is promoted through regional and national policies.
In the EU, a mandatory obligation of at least 2% SAF blending in aviation fuels from January 1, 2025 was made official in October 2023, for all aircraft departing from EU airports.
Prior to 2025, some European countries had already set existing national targets for SAF:
    ✓Norway: From 2020, 0.5% by v/v of all fuel sold in the aviation industry in Norway must be advanced biofuels or biofuels produced from used cooking oil and animal fats (aviation fuel for military aircraft is excluded).
