This section discusses regulations, including specifications, taxes and subsidies, and alternative diesel mandates, related to diesel in India.
Quality specifications
The quality of diesel sold in India is regulated by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in consultation with fuel stakeholders, including refiners, oil marketing companies, the Society of Indian Automotive Manufacturers, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and non-governmental organizations.
The specifications are approved by the Petroleum, Coal and Related Products Division Council and published by the Bureau of Indian Standards.
Conventional diesel
Officially, three types of diesel are currently sold in India, based on usage:
