Exports and imports
Viet Nam is a net crude petroleum exporter, but a net gasoline importer.
According to the General Department of Customs, almost 2 million tonnes of gasoline were imported in 2023, slightly higher than the 1.93 million total in 2022, but more than double that of 2021.
In 2021, domestic gasoline demand was reduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and refined petroleum product storage overflowed. Hence, imports were reduced.
Gasoline export data is not available. However, the country exported 2.36 million tonnes of refined petroleum products in 2023. The figure below shows gasoline imports and refined product exports from 2018-2023.
