Alternative gasoline mandates
At present, the government does not mandate the use of alternative fuels to replace gasoline.
In December 2008, the government launched a biofuels blending mandate that consisted of biodiesel and ethanol program. However, the ethanol blending program was scrapped in 2013. There has been no further explanation of why the ethanol blending program was cancelled before it had started.
Pakistan is a major ethanol exporter. It produces and exports industrial grade and extra neutral alcohol grades of ethanol. Thus, the industry might have to reduce exports if the government were to continue to mandate an ethanol blending program.
