Octane enhancers
Straight-run gasoline produced by the refineries may, or may not, meet the minimum octane rating required by the specifications, depending on the quality of crude petroleum and the refinery process. Thus, refineries blend additives to increase the octane number to meet the minimum limit.
Several types of octane enhancers are commonly used:
•Metallic additive:
•Oxygenates:
At present, methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) is the octane enhancer most commonly used in the United Arab Emirates.
This section provides an overview of octane enhancers found in the gasoline samples.
