Europe
Maritime transport accounts for about 75% of EU external trade and 31% of EU internal trade, in terms of volume. This clearly shows that maritime transport plays an important role in the European economy. Ship traffic to and from the European Economic Area accounts for nearly 11% of all EU carbon dioxide emissions from transport and about 3-4% of total EU carbon dioxide emissions. Thus, decarbonizing the maritime sector is critical.
This report will focus on ammonia as an alternative marine fuel in Europe. It will give an overview of the regulations in place to promote its use, along with the associated challenges. Also, projects in the pipeline for the production and use of ammonia in marine vessels will be covered.
