Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)

In the CIS region, most of countries are members of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and follow its rules, except Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

In the region, Russia is an important ammonia producer at the global level. In 2020, it produced 19.6 million tonnes of ammonia. It is mainly used to obtain urea, ammonium nitrate and other fertilizers.

There are discussions about using ammonia as an alternative marine fuel in Russia but not in the near future. Liquified natural gas (LNG) is currently the main alternative marine fuel considered. This was confirmed by Sovcomflot, which specializes in the transportation of oil, oil products and liquefied gas and is a large tanker fleet operator.
