Projection of ammonia use in maritime

The European Commission’s proposed FuelEU Maritime promotes renewable and low carbon fuels for marine fuels as of January 1, 2025 with the proposed target of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity limits at 2%. However, e-ammonia is projected to account for only 0.4% of the overall renewable and low-carbon fuels (RLFs) used for maritime purposes in 2050. This is the earliest timeline where a slight growth of ammonia use emerges in the marine sector. Ammonia will play a role in the decarbonization of the marine transport sector in the longer term, however other renewable and low carbon fuels (RLFs) will make up the majority of the maritime fuel mix in the shorter term, as illustrated in the table below.
