Imports and exports
EU Member States (MS) have been importing bio-based diesel to meet demand. According to Eurostat, the EU bio-based diesel market had a surplus up to 2014, when exports reached 5,029,000 tonnes and imports reached 4,763,000 tonnes. This surplus diminished until the trade was almost balanced in 2016. In 2017, the surplus became a deficit, with imports exceeding exports by 120,000 tonnes. This deficit grew further, reaching its highest gap (1,934,000 tonnes) in 2022. In 2023, the import/export gap decreased to be 1,420,00 tonnes.
