Octane enhancers
Depending on the quality of the crude petroleum and the refinery process, gasoline produced by refineries may or may not meet the minimum octane rating required by the specifications. Refiners, therefore, add octane enhancers to increase the octane rating or number.
Refiners use many types of octane enhancers:
•Organic octane enhancers:
•Non-organic octane enhancers
Currently, methyl tert-butyl ether is the most used in many countries, while ethanol is commonly used in countries with a mature sugar industry.
This section looks at octane enhancers found in Kuwait’s gasoline samples.
