Biodiesel blends
Kenya’s Ministry of Energy developed a for the biodiesel industry that proposed a technical and economic feasibility study analysis to start biodiesel blending in Kenya, achieving a blending ratio of B5 in 2012 and B10 in 2020. However, no mandate was ever officially enforced and no consistent biodiesel blending has been carried out.
In 2023, the Kenyan Ministry of Energy and Petroleum published the ‘Kenya Energy Transition & Investment Plan 2023 to 2050’ to outline how each sector will contribute to Net Zero by 2050. For the road transport sector, electrification and hydrogen are the key energy carriers expected to increase in use from mid-2030s. The use of biofuels is expected to be used in aviation and shipping mostly.
