Cetane enhancers
Cetane improvers are diesel additives which boost diesel’s cetane number. To produce high cetane diesel requires more heavy crude petroleum during the refining process. Therefore, cetane enhancers are an easier way to create diesel fuel with a high cetane number
2-ethylhexyl nitrate (2-EHN) is the cetane improver most commonly used in diesel fuel. Diesel specifications MNS 0216:2017 and MNS 6861:2020 do not set maximum limits for cetane enhancers or EHN.
SGS Worldwide Fuel Survey results from diesel samples taken in 2011-2019 show that most diesel samples, except those taken in 2012, contained 2-EHN.
Please contact SGS INSPIRE for more information on 2-EHN in diesel.
