Since July 1, 2021, unleaded gasoline is the only gasoline grade available on the Algerian market.
The regulatory limit for sulfur in Algeria has not been changed since 1998. According to SGS Worldwide Fuel Survey data, in 2022 the average sulfur content of gasoline was below 20 mg/kg (within the maximum regulatory limit of 100 mg/kg of sulfur content).
According to the government, modernization projects of Hassi Messaoud new refinery is expected to allow excess gasoline to be exported from 2024. However, according to latest sources, this project might be delayed. The launch of other refineries in Biskra and Tiaret have been postponed from 2022 to post-2025.
