Vehicle compatibility with HVO

Hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) does not require a separate infrastructure for distribution. “It is a non-fossil hydrocarbon fuel characterized by the same chemical structure as conventional diesel fuel that can be blended with conventional diesel fuel, and does not require adaptation of the vehicle power train or engines.” (Lapuerta et al., 2013)

Different heavy-duty vehicle producers have announced that 100% HVO (according to the standard EN 15940) can be used in their vehicles without adaptation required (see table below). Note that on August 25, 2023, Cummins approved the use of pure HVO in high-horsepower engine across all industrial application (mining, marine, rail, defense and oil & gas), in addition to its vehicle engines.
