Sustainable aviation fuel mandate

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is referred to as aviation fuel derived from non-fossil sources, or feedstock which has been cultivated and processed in a way that works to close the carbon cycle. Consequently, the use of SAF significantly reduces carbon emissions and results in a reduction of life cycle emissions relative to conventional jet fuel. There are seven pathways certified (by the American Society for Testing and Materials) to produce SAF, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Currently, the most common technology pathway is the hydrotreatment of esters and fatty acids (HEFA) using waste oils, followed by co-processing.
