Bio-heavy oil mandate
In September 2018, South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) approved the use of bio-heavy oil made from animal fats, used cooking oil and biodiesel by-products, for domestic power generation purposes from January 2019. Heavy oil is fuel used for internal combustion engines, boilers and furnaces.
This measure was taken to help the country increase the share of renewable energy in the power generation mix by 2030. However, as of July 19, 2024, the government does not set a volumetric mandate for this bio-heavy oil.
