Introduction
Under the European Green Deal, launched on December 12, 2019, the Regulation (EU) 2021/1119 of June 30, 2021 (European Climate Law) has set a legally binding target to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. To attain this goal, the EU has agreed to meet reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 55% in all sectors by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.
What is the Fit-for-55 package?
The ‘Fit-for-55’ terminology refers to the EU’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. The Fit-for-55 package aims to convert the Green Deal ambitions into law. This package is a set of proposals to raise current climate, energy, and transport-related legislations so it is aligned with the new targets.
