Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF)
The 212th Session of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council (Nov. 2017) agreed that SAF and low carbon aviation fuels can be used to offset CO2 emissions. The ICAO also approved the following definitions for alternative aviation fuels:
    •CORSIA sustainable aviation fuel: A renewable or waste-derived aviation fuel that meets the CORSIA Sustainability Criteria
    •CORSIA lower carbon aviation fuel: A fossil-based aviation fuel that meets the CORSIA Sustainability Criteria
    •CORSIA eligible fuel: A CORSIA sustainable aviation fuel or a CORSIA lower carbon aviation fuel, which an operator may use to reduce their offsetting requirements
To date, the ICAO Council has endorsed just two of the sustainability criteria (Greenhouse Gases and Carbon stocks
