Emission limits for heavy-duty diesel vehicles are provided in the standard NOM-044-SEMARNAT-2017 which specifies that its implementation requires the nationwide availability of diesel with a maximum sulfur content of 15 mg/kg. This is necessary for the correct operation of new diesel engines. Since full penetration of diesel 15 mg/kg will only be achieved in 2025, the deadline has been postponed to January 1, 2025.
Table below shows the timelines of the implementation of the heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) and light-duty vehicles (LDV) standards, and of the diesel and gasoline sulfur content in Mexico.
