Emission limits for heavy-duty diesel vehicles are provided in the standard
NOM-044-SEMARNAT-2017
which specifies that its implementation requires the nationwide availability of diesel with a maximum sulfur content of 15 mg/kg. This is necessary for the correct operation of new diesel engines. Since full penetration of diesel 15 mg/kg will only be achieved in 2025, the deadline has been postponed to January 1, 2025.
Table below shows the timelines of the implementation of the heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) and light-duty vehicles (LDV) standards, and of the diesel and gasoline sulfur content in Mexico.
Estimated timeline of the HDV and LDV standard, and timeline for fuel sulfur set in the specifications
