Tier 1 and Tier 2 (old standards)
Tier 1 emission standards
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published its Tier 1 light-duty vehicle (LDV) and light-duty truck (LDT) emission standards on June 5, 1991. The period during which Tier 1 standards were in force ran from model year (MY) 1994 to MY 2003. The standards were applied to all vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) comprising the weights of vehicle, passengers, goods and any other accessories of up to 8,500 lbs.
LDVs were divided into passenger cars, light light-duty trucks (LLDT), below 6,000 lbs GVWR and heavy light-duty trucks (HLDT), above 6,000 lbs GVWR. LLDTs and HLDTs were further subdivided as depicted below.
