Octane grades
The EU on fuel quality sets minimum mandatory requirements for gasoline distributed in the EU. The EU requires member states to transpose these requirements into the national legislation to ensure common market for gasoline vehicles. The Directive rules that a minimum RON is 95 and MON 85. The member states may decide to continue to permit the placing on the market of gasoline grade with a minimum MON of 81 and a minimum RON of 91.
The EU
enlargement policy requires the countries, aspiring to join the EU, to transpose the acqui communautaire. All of the Balkan countries have aligned the legislative requirements with the Directive 98/70/EC. Therefore, the minimum RON is 95 and it is allowed to continue distributing RON 91.
