This section provides an overview about the actual octane number and octane boosters per octane rating and ethanol grades. Following the reduction in aromatics, olefins and metallic additives, Europe has been relying on MTBE and TAME to meet RON 95. Following the approval of the 10% renewable energy share target, new oxygenates such as ETBE, tert-amyl ethyl ether (TAEE) and ethanol have come into use. Interestingly, in recent years, we have observed the use of NMA in Bulgaria, Italy and some other countries in the gasoline grades with a higher octane rating.
The majority of the EU member states continue distributing RON 95 E5 as the most popular gasoline grade where MTBE and ETBE are used interchangeably. There is a little octane benefit from ethanol blending in this grade.
