Octane grades
Most African countries have only one grade of gasoline. Based on each country’s gasoline specifications, gasoline grades can be divided in three categories as shown in the figure below:
•RON < 91. Such grades are only present in Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal and Sudan
•91 ≤ RON < 95. Most countries have a RON 91 grade. RON 93 grades are present in East Africa and in some countries in Southern Africa
•95 ≤ RON. Across Africa, 21 countries have a grade with RON 95. Grades with higher RON only exist in Algeria (RON 96) and Mozambique (RON 98)
RON is not regulated in Sierra Leone.
